Try the Tree Wall Sit for a Challenging Outdoor Partner Workout

Must read

Who needs a wall when you’ve got a tree?

Grab a pal, head to a local park, and make like Men’s Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S. and Women’s Health editor-in-chief Liz Plosser in this quick partner workout move.

In the latest “Liz and Eb” video, the duo hold a static wall sit, followed by single-leg marches, and then leg extensions. It’s quick, but it’s an effective workout. “It was really fun. I will never look at a tree the same way again,” says Plosser. As Samuel notes, there’s a bit of instability as you move and recline on the tree. The wall sit works your quads, the single-leg march challenges the stability of each of your legs and fires your glutes and your quads, then the finisher move of the leg extension gives you a nice burn to wrap up the workout. (Wall sit finishers are no joke, friends; level up your wall sit with these extra mechanics if you really want to take your training up a notch.) The whole series takes about a minute and you may just find you want to challenge your friend to a round two.

If you’re not playing in a park, try this partner wall sit workout for a nice variation of the tree wall sit and for a heck of an isometric exercise to target your quads and glutes. Or, go solo and try these seven wall sit exercises to challenge your whole body. This workout includes everything from a wall sit with biceps curl to a wall sit with overhead press. When you’re done, you’ll definitely be ready to postpone using a wall as a prop for a while—and your lower body will be in tip-top shape if you run through the moves regularly.
